Lord Mayor Hosts Civic Reception to honour Glanmire Basketball Teams

On 30th May 2007, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Michael Ahern, and Cork City Council hosted a Civic Reception in the Council Chamber, City Hall, Cork for the victorious Glanmire Basketball Teams on winning the Women’s Senior National Cup and the Under 20 and Under 18 National Cups.

The Lord Mayor paid tribute to the full panel and the backroom team who helped guide them to success, singling out in particular Mr. Timmy Murphy for his many years of service.

“ We honour especially you the panel of players because it is you who have achieved such a high standard.  We honour also the trainers and those who have worked in the backroom for Glanmire Basketball over a long number of years because success never comes overnight and those who lay the foundations can easily be forgotten when the summit has been reached.  In that regard I would like to pay a special tribute to Mr.Timmy Murphy who is Mr. Basketball in Glanmire and he has over a very long number of years worked to bring the teams for the area to the highest level.”

The Lord Mayor also made mention of the fact that he and his wife Eileen had lived for many years in the Glanmire area and had in fact raised their family there.

The Lord Mayor also paid tribute to the teams’ sponsors commenting that given the expense involved in competing in sport that the teams might not have achieved such success without this financial assistance.
