Lord Mayor hosts Civic Reception for former TDs Bernard Allen and Noel O'Flynn

On Friday May 6th 2011 the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Michael O'Connell and Cork City Council hosted a Civic Reception to honour two former TD's, Bernard Allen (FG) and Noel O'Flynn(FF) who retired prior to the General Election in February for their services to the Cork North Central constituency.

Speaking at the reception in their honour held in the Millennium Hall, City Hall, Cork the Lord Mayor praised both former deputies for the service to the city and to the country as a whole:

"Former Deputies Allen and O'Flynn embody the best of what public service in politics is truly about

  • Both were outspoken advocates for both their constituents and the country at large and neither was shy or retiring when it came to making those opinions heard.
  • Both served many years in the Chamber here at City Hall as councillors when it was Cork Corporation, Bernard Allen having the distinction of serving as Lord Mayor in 1988.
  • Both representatives served the people of Cork at a time when the words public service could appear in a sentence meaning precisely that, service to the public.

Gentlemen, you have both done the state and this city some service, we thank you for it and wish you both health and happiness for the future"
