Winter Preparedness - Sandbag Policy
The prime responsibility for protecting premises rests with the property owner. Cork City Council does not distribute sand bags to individual premises at risk of flooding.
Cork City Council does, however, maintain a strategic stock of gel bags at Anglesea Terrace Depot and gel and sand bags at Kinsale Road Civic Amenity Centre (Tramore Valley Park)
During periods of flood risk, members of the public may arrange to visit either location to collect sand or gel bags by contacting: 021 492 4299 between the hours of 9.00 – 17.00, Monday to Friday.
Please note, a record will be kept of all gel bags and sand bags collected.
Owners of properties that are at risk of flooding are encouraged to keep where possible, their own stock of gel bags or empty sandbags together with sufficient stocks of sand to fill bags at times of potential flooding. It should be noted that gel bags/sand bags can be effective when flood water levels are marginal, but may be largely ineffective in relation to high water levels.
It should also be noted that while gel / sand bags may be effective in preventing water from entering through the doorway threshold, water may still enter a property by other means, e.g. drains, air vents, utility connections etc. Property owners may consider investing in the provision of suitable proprietary flood gates and covers to protect openings such as doors, windows and vents. Cork City Council is not responsible for any water ingress that may occur to a property.
NOTE ON USE OF GEL BAGS:
Open up the protective wrapper and remove the gel bags. Flatten out each bag and ensure that the contents are evenly distributed. Immerse the gel bag inside a container of water (not sea water). Within three minutes the gel bag will be fully expanded and ready for use.
Flood bags are to be immersed in water and expanded prior to placement. Flood bags are not to be left in doorway for flood waters to expand.
If used properly, flood bags may prevent water entering through the doorway threshold. However, water may still enter a property by this or other means, e.g. drains, air vents, utility connections etc. Cork City Council is not responsible for any water ingress that may occur to your property.
