The Environment Directorate is responsible for the delivery of the following services: Water,  , and .  Our approach to care for the Environment is based on the principle of sustainable development i.e. “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Cork City Council, in its role as a provider of services such as waste collection, recycling facilities, water and drainage can undertake measures to protect the environment we live in, nevertheless there is a duty on everybody to make their contribution in the area of environmental care.

The Water Services Section of the Environment Directorate provides for the monitoring, treatment and distribution of a continous and sufficient supply of pure drinking water in a sustainable manner for all domestic, commercial and industrial consumers and provides and maintains, in a sustainable manner, a drainage collection and treatment systems to meet the needs of the city.  The Section is also responsible for the management and operation of Capital Projects under the Water Services Investment Programme.   • The Drainage Section is concerned with the collection, transport and treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater from houses, commercial premises, factories, hospitals, schools etc. in the City
  • It achieves this through a network of sewers, culverts and tunnels extending over 500km, through most streets and lanes in the City, 18 pumpstations and a large biological treatment plant.
  • On average 100,000 cubic metres of wastewater is treated each day.
  • In addition surface water is collected from premises and roads and conveyed by sewers and culverts to rivers and streams in and around the City.  More information >>

Water Monitoring

Water is analysed on a regular basis as required by the E.U. Regulations. The results of the analyses are published annually by the Environmental Protection Agency and are now included on the Council Website.

Waste Collection and Recycling

  • Cork City Council also provides a collection and recycling service for shops, businesses, schools and other non-domestic users around the city. The charge levied for waste depends on the size of the bin(s).
